Wacky Water

What You Need:

• A pitcher
• Water
• Food coloring
• A glass
• Newspaper
• About 2 feet of string

Tip: Do this experiment over some newspaper. It can get a little messy!

Question: How can you pour water into a glass two feet away?

1) First, spread out some newspaper and put the glass on it .

2) Then, fill a pitcher half way with water and add a few drops of food coloring .

3) Soak the string in water .

4) Then, tie one end of the string to the handle of the pitcher. Let the other end of the string hang into the glass .

5) Stretch the string tightly across the top of the pitcher, while holding the other end of the string against the side of the glass.

6) Now, slowly pour the water along the string. Keep trying until you find the right angle for the water to run down the string.

7) Be amazed how the water runs along the string and doesn’t pour out onto the newspaper!

A Scientific Explanation:

There are three forces at work in this experiment: gravity, adhesion, and cohesion. Gravity pulls the water down toward Earth. Adhesion attracts water to other objects. Cohesion attracts water molecules to other water molecules. In this experiment adhesion attracts the water to the string and cohesion keeps the water flowing in a steady stream .
