Author Lee Bennett Hopkins has written numerous children”s books. As one of the authors of the I Can Read series, Hopkins wrote Hamsters, Shells, and Spelling Bees; A Pet for Me: Poems; and Surprises, which won the American Library Association Notable Children's Book of 1984. He has also written books for teachers and anthologies of poetry. Hopkins was born in Scranton, Pa. on April 13, 1938. He currently lives in Cape Coral, Fla.
