Beatrice Gormley

Beatrice Gormley decided at age nine to become a writer. However, it took her a long time to figure out how to make that dream come true. She grew up in Southern California, graduated from Pomona College and went to work for a book publisher, where she met her husband, Robert, an editor. They eventually moved to Massachusetts and soon Beatrice began to give serious time to her writing. She had some articles, essays and book reviews published, but found that her stories were always rejected. Then, when her children were nine and seven, she tried writing a book for them. Bingo! At last she was writing the kind of stories that made her want to become a writer back when she was nine! In 1981, her first book, Mail-Order Wings, was published.

Ever since, she has written about things that matter to her. For instance, her interest in astronomy led her to write a biography of Maria Mitchell, the first American woman astronomer. Her love of history - and fondness for the idea of time travel - led her Back to the Titanic! and Back to the Day Lincoln Was Shot!. Beatrice has a great fondness for the places she has lived and often sets her books in the surrounding areas. Her interests include cats, dogs and birds; long hikes; friends; aliens from outer space; volcanoes; and people who struggle to achieve their dreams. You can find all of these in her books.

Beatrice and Robert have two grown daughters and live near the Hudson River in New York.
